SPEDCONT – gas by rail!
Błonie, 11 February 2020
SPEDCONT, a part of the PEKAES Group, keeps extending the infrastructure of its rail terminal in Łódź. With the new investments, the company has increased its transhipment capacity and gained the capability to provide new types of services. It has successfully completed the test phase regarding the transport of liquefied natural gas (LNG) imported to Poland.
The activities of SPEDCONT include rail and road transport, transhipment and storage of various cargo, including dangerous goods (“ADR”). The latest challenge faced by the company was the transport of a tank-container filled with gas.
“This is the first time we have transported LNG. Intermodal gas transport requires compliance with a large number of guidelines for the carriage of ADR and RID dangerous goods. In particular, it requires suitable technical facilities and dedicated rolling stock. The scale of the entire project was unprecedented, and the transport of the tank-container consisted of several phases,” informs Marcin Dobruchowski, President of the Board of SPEDCONT.
During the first stage, SPEDCONT collected the new tank-container from a client in southern Poland and then using road transport delivered it to the port in Gdynia, after which the tank was loaded onto a vessel sailing to the container port in order to finally be delivered by land to the refinery. After the tank-container was filled with gas (LNG), the cargo was sent on its way back. Then, after transhipment at the port in Gdynia, the loaded tank-container was shipped by rail to the SPEDCONT Łódź terminal, where it was loaded onto a truck and delivered to the customer.
“Transport was carried out very efficiently, and the freight got to the destination on schedule. The tank-container with the gas weighed approximately 35 tons. Since the project involved the transport of dangerous material, it required special precautions and compliance with all relevant procedures for the carriage of ADR and RID dangerous goods,” adds Marcin Dobruchowski, President of the Board of SPEDCONT.
SPEDCONT offers comprehensive intermodal services. Efficient transport of goods and their transhipment at the rail terminal of SPEDCONT enable deliveries to various places in Poland and in Europe.

− Due to the rapid increase in volumes as part of LTL distribution, we decided to increase the warehouse space of the Warsaw Branch. We moved operations related to contract logistics to a new building located in Pass near Warsaw Branch, thus increasing the available space in the Warsaw distribution terminal. I would like to add that this year, we are planning further investments in terminal infrastructure – in February we will open another distribution terminal in western Poland – said Maciej Bachman, the CEO of PEKAES Group.
